Lake Moran Lake Obituary

Lake Moran (Spiff) Lake

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lake Moran (Spiff) Lake, age 88. He died at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Tuesday, April 7, 2020 in Somerset, Kentucky after struggling with hip surgery complications. Spiff was a lifelong resident of the Cartersville community in Garrard County near Berea, Kentucky, but most recently resided at Somerwoods Nursing Home after living with his son, Joe, for six years in Somerset, Kentucky. He married Edna Lucinda Belcher November 2, 1961. After 39 years of marriage, he lost his wife to cancer December 13, 2001. Edna was from Corn Creek Whitley County, Kentucky and was the daughter of George Washington and Nancy Wilson Belcher. Spiff grew up in and around Cartersville/Berea, Kentucky. He would often tell people that he lived within 100 feet of where he was born for 81 years and was heartsick to have to walk off and leave his home to live with his family in Somerset. Spiff was a 1951 graduate of Paint Lick High School. In 1962, Spiff became a faithful member of White Lick Baptist Church. He gave his life to the Lord at 30 years old and was baptized in Hot Shot Wilmot's Lake in Cartersville. As a member of White Lick Baptist Church, Spiff made many meaningful and lifelong friends. Other than his family, Spiff was most passionate about his horses and mules and found great joy raising and breaking Tennessee Walking horses and gated mules. In his lifetime, Spiff raised 211 horses and mules and was proud to say in all those years he only lost 13 foals. He also enjoyed being a member and riding with the Trail Pleasure Saddle Club for many years.
Spiff was the first of nine children born to the late Bill and Delsia (Lakes) Lake October 9, 1931 at home in Berea, Kentucky. His wife, Edna Belcher Lake; one brother, Jack Lake and a half brother, William (Booger Bill) Lake; three sisters, Vivian Guise, Lexa Kyle, and Sandra Alexander preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters Libby and her husband Don Pigg (Dayton, OH), and Yvonne and her husband Dean Huffman (Dayton, OH); two brothers Billy and his wife Tammy Lake (Lancaster, KY) and Edsel (Pooch) and his wife Eva Lake (Cartersville, KY); his only son, Joe and his wife Deborah Lake (Somerset, KY); three grandchildren, Seth Lake, Joshua Lake, and Hannah Lake Crawford and her husband Philip (Somerset, KY); one great-grandchild Benjamin Lake Crawford. His legacy includes being a story teller, the family historian, and a friend of many. Spiff will be fondly remembered by his many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many good friends.
Due to Covid-19, A Celebration of Life service will be held for family and friends at a later date.
A graveside service will be held for the immediate family on Good Friday, April 10, 2020 in the Berea Cemetery with Bro. David Bullock of Somerset officiating.
Lakes Funeral Home in Berea is in charge of all arrangements.
