Obituary for Varnell Burgett Grissom

Mrs. Varnell Burgett Grissom
February 18, 1929 ~ April 20, 2017
Memorial graveside services for Mrs. Varnell “Nana” Burgett Grissom will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017, beginning at 3:00PM at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tallulah, Louisiana. The message will be delivered by close family friend Brother Rickey A. Jones and prayer by Brother Larry Foster, followed by interment.
Nana was born in Alabama on Monday, February 18, 1929, from the union of Mr. Willie Burgett and the former Miss Mittie Toyer, both of Alabama. Nana, a resident of Saint Joseph, peacefully departed this world, while at Franklin Medical Center of Winnsboro, surrounded by her loving family.
Nana was forever faithful in her vows to both her husband and her Lord. Even still, the test of time could not make Nana waiver or falter in her deeply rooted Christian beliefs. It is with these beliefs that Nana reared her two daughters, Phyllis and Marcella. Nana never met a stranger, inviting all to her dinner table and immense daily home cooked meals. She had an innate talent for cooking and truly enjoyed experimenting with new dishes regardless of the season. Cooking aside, Nana truly cherished children and her family.
Nana was preceded in death by both her parents, followed by the genuine love of her life, Ezra and her sister, Susie Emery, of Doniphan, MO.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Miss Phyllis Grissom Daves, St. Joseph and Mrs. Marcella (Mike) Vinson, St. Joseph; Grandchildren: John (Loretta) Daves, St. Joseph, Brian Daves, Sterlington, Dale (Beth) Vinson, St. Joseph, Erin (Matt) Callihan, Clinton, MS, Matthew Vinson, St. Joseph; Great-grandchildren: Lil John (Marleigh) Daves, Kelly Daves, Taylor Ann, Ashlynn, and Mattiline Vinson; Great-great grandchildren: Hayden, John III, and Ezra Carter Daves.
Anyone wishing to leave the family words of sympathy and support may sign Nana’s online registry at www.griffinfuneralhome.net. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Nana’s honor to Tensas Academy.
