Darwin Hatheway
HALLOWELL, MAINE At 87 young years, Darwin Leo Hatheway’s subscription to life expired Tuesday, December 12, 2017. A resident of Hallowell, ME since 2000, Darwin passed peacefully, at home, holding hands with his wife Beverly Bustin Hatheway and his daughter Gigi Hatheway Atkinson by his side. Born on October 18, 1930 in Erie, PA, his family moved to the Dallas, TX area in the late summer of 1942. He enlisted in the military service in the spring of 1949 and served for nearly 10 years. Thereafter, he attended Northeastern University majoring in graduate physics and mathematics. While at the U. S. Naval Academy, Darwin’s athletic choice was sailing the schooner FREEDOM (Naval registry IX-43) becoming Sailing Master 1953-1954. After graduation, he was assigned to the Atlantic Amphibious Fleet where he served on an attack cargo ship and two multi-purpose destroyer escorts. Then he was assigned to the destroyer STRONG (DD-758) and quickly became the Engineering Officer. On conclusion of over haul in summer of 1958, STRONG was sent down range as a station ship for test firing of missiles. On June 5, 1954 Darwin married with Joan Helen Harnett of Arlington, VA; that union produced four children who survive him. Joan Helen Harnett died of pancreatic cancer May 2, 1988. Upon release from active duty, Darwin was employed by Bethlehem Steel Fore River Shipyard at Quincy, MA on the nuclear cruiser project. He left there in 1960 for Edgerton, Germeshausen and Grier of Boston working on nuclear related projects. Due to family illness, he joined RCA Data in Bethesda, MD working on Air Force Intel projects. When the Intel projects were shut down he joined the Washington Projects Department of Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory. While employed by small companies his insight helped found the Amphibious Medicine School. In the autumn of 1970 Darwin relocated his family to Augusta, ME and joined the Executive Branch bureaucracy. Darwin’s engineering and physics training and his variety work experience led to his becoming an expert in systems and organization issues. He was a systems and policy adviser to Senator Beverly Bustin-Hatheway during her last three terms in the Maine Legislature. August 11, 1990, Darwin married with the Hon. Beverly (Miner) Hatheway then serving in the Maine Senate, who survives him. Also surviving are their children Darwin L. Jr. and spouse Deborah Hayden, David W. Bustin, Jr., Charles Harnett and spouse Maribeth Divine, Catherine M. Bustin, Joan Ann (Gigi) and spouse Thomas Atkinson and John Andrew (Andy) and spouse Darlene Lavallee; and 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 21st at 11:00 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Ave. Augusta. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the spring. The family extends special thanks and gratitude to MaineGeneral Hospice Care, and Togus Veterans Center, as well as the Maine Veteran Home, for their care and attention to Darwin and Beverly, which allowed him to pass at home, with his wife and family.
