Warren E. Niles Obituary

Warren Ernest Niles

Bangor – Born April 1, 1948 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Warren died at home on November 23, 2019.

Warren’s early years were spent at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico where his father worked as a physicist in the nation’s nascent rocket program. The family followed the rocket program to Huntsville, Alabama, Washington, DC, and Cocoa Beach, Florida, which remained the long-time family home.

Warren graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Accounting, and used these skills in the work he did as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia for 3 years. This began his career as an automation and operations consultant for microfinance and small business banks in Asia and Africa. He received his MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology in data processing and accounting, and developed banking software and support for the financial institutions he worked with. Warren lived and worked in Botswana, Indonesia, Uganda and Eritrea, and worked on other assignments that took him to the Philippines, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, and Rwanda.

Warren was most proud of his accomplishment later in life when he earned his private pilot’s license and went on to earn his instrument and commercial pilot ratings. Much of his instrument rating work was done in Uganda, which offered some once-in-a-lifetime air safaris. When he moved to Bangor, Maine, he flew out of DeWitt Field in Old Town, which is where he completed his instrument and commercial ratings.

Warren is survived by his partner Pam Champagne of Bangor, Maine, his 3 sons, Truman, Franklin and Allen Niles of Akron, Ohio; Huntsville, Alabama; and Los Angeles, California, respectively; his sister Janet Niles of Atlanta, Georgia; and his former wife, Beng Choo Niles of Merritt Island, Florida. He was pre-deceased by his sister Barbara Shanklin (nee Niles) of Jacksonville, Florida.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 1 pm Sunday December 1, 2019 , at the Family Reception Center of Brookings Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, ME. 04401. Interment will be held at a later date at the family site at the Hartland, Wisconsin cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in Warren’s name to the AOPA Foundation, 421 Aviation Way, Frederick, Maryland 21701; Manna Ministries, 629 Main St., Bangor, ME. 04401 or the Bangor Firefighters, 289 Main St., Bangor, ME. 04401.
