Douglas L. Halm, 94, of South Bristol, passed away peacefully on February 3 with his family by his side. Born on May 15, 1924 in Maplewood, NJ, he was the son of Herman and Olive Halm. Doug grew up in Maplewood, attending Columbia High school. After high school, Doug entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY where he earned a degree in Engineering. During WWII, he served as the Navigator aboard the USS Charles S. Perry, an Allen M. Sumner - class destroyer. He married his high school sweetheart, Drusilla Whitney, on June 21, 1947. Doug was an engineer in the Tool and Die Industry, and an avid golfer and gardener. He was also a volunteer fireman in Madison, NJ where he and his wife raised their three children. Since childhood, Doug’s heart belonged in Maine thanks to spending summers at the family property, Jones Point in South Bristol, on the banks of the Damariscotta River. He retired in 1986 when he and Drusilla moved to South Bristol, not far from the family summer property. He was very busy during retirement: mentoring for many in DARE and other programs, golfing at Wawenock, helping to build the new library in South Bristol, and attending to his beautiful gardens. In addition to his parents, Doug was predeceased by his wife, Drusilla; and his brothers, Gordon and Heron. Doug is survived by his children, Duncan W Halm of Waldoboro, Douglas R Halm of Morrison, Co, Drusilla Barkalow and husband Bob of Nobleboro; and grandchildren Kate Halm, Troy Halm, Justin Halm, Cassidy Barkalow, William Barkalow, Ben Halm and May Halm.
