Lincoln and Enfield - We are saddened to announce the passing of our dearly loved father, grandfather, and great grandfather on Monday, August 3, 2020. Vaughn was well known in the communities of Lincoln and Enfield. You may have seen him driving his little tan truck to Hannaford, or maybe you saw a distinguished looking man wearing his dress hat or his World War II cap and flourishing his Eagle’s head cane. Perhaps you spotted him at a local restaurant with his friend, Charlotte, at his side. They truly were a handsome couple. Vaughn earned the respect of many people in our community. Folks enjoyed his sharp wit, his very strong handshake, and his warm and friendly personality. He had a long life, and we, his family and friends, will truly miss this amazing man. Vaughn was the son of Ray and Nellie Reed Tilton. He was pre-deceased by his nine brothers and sisters: John, Arnold, Harry, Raymond, Jim, Dick, Evelyn, Plum, and Fern. He was also pre-deceased by his beautiful loving wife, Lois, and a beloved grandson in law, Jay Bean. Vaughn enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a reconnaissance armored vehicle driver in Europe in the 3rd Army under General Patton. He was honored with the E.A.M.E. Campaign ribbon with five battle stars. For more information about his unit please go to www.tankdestroyer.net. Vaughn was a dedicated employee of the Lincoln Paper Mill for 43 years. He came out of retirement to work at Lloyd’s Store in South Lincoln for nearly ten years. When he wasn’t working for others, he worked along side his wife in their beautiful and productive gardens. Vaughn married Lois Huntley on June 14, 1946. They were devoted to each other throughout 61 years of marriage. After Lois lost the use of her legs in a devastating medical event, Vaughn lovingly cared for her for nine years. Vaughn and Lois raised three children, Bonnie Gray (husband Dennis), Shelley Shedd (husband Paul), Dwight Tilton (wife Robin). The children grew up in a loving and supportive home. One of their fondest memories is of their Dad’s good night hug. After being a widower for several years, Vaughn renewed his friendship with recently widowed Charlotte Michaud. Vaughn and Charlotte enjoyed spending time together reminiscing and going out to eat. They helped each other through their grief and loneliness. Charlotte became a dear companion who helped Vaughn grow spiritually. Vaughn was proud of his grandchildren: Holly Samson (Eric), Heather Doane (Steve), Melissa Cameron, Dana Gray (Rosa), Heidi Priest (Chip), Raymond Tilton (Crystal), Joshua Tilton (Elizabeth). Vaughn’s great grandchildren were always happy to visit their papa and get a big hug and a story: Madison and Cameron Samson, Chelsea Thompson and Kylie Bean, Lyla Priest, Tyler and Nicole Cameron, Carlos, Zachary and Dominik Gray, Jackson and Lexie Tilton, and Annabelle and Jonathan Tilton. The most recent addition to the family was great, great grandchild Jayde Thompson. Vaughn is also survived by a sister in law, Edna Huntley, and several nieces, and nephews. Vaughn was a sensitive and caring man who was generous with his family and with organizations who sought his monetary donations. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He had great strength of character and was always a good neighbor and co-worker. He made many sacrifices during his life in order to provide for the needs of others. He faithfully served his country during wartime. He brought love and laughter to his friends and family. We, the members of his family, are so fortunate and blessed by God to have had him in our lives. A private service for the family will be held at the Lamson Funeral Home, Clay Chapel, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Following a military service, burial will be at the Dodlin Road Cemetery in Enfield.
