Frances M. Vose

CUSHING - Frances M. Vose, 83, died following complications from her second hip fracture in less than a year, Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Born February 10, 1926 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Frank and Grace Stearns Manning. Frances grew up in Greenfield, and was a 1943 graduate of Greenfield High School. Following high school, she attended LaSalle Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts. She later attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where she majored in Library Science and minored in Archeology. Leaving Michigan to marry, she wed John Bald, whom she had met while staying on her family's island off Tenants Harbor. Later she married Charles Vose, Jr. in May 1952 in Greenfield. They made their home in Greenfield their entire married lives. Active in the community, Mrs. Vose volunteered at the library and was a girl scout leader while her children were growing up. She was also a member of the Archeology Club where she participated in several digs in Deerfield, MA at Native American battle grounds. Once a year she assisted her husband at the stationary store where he worked, tending the register during the Christmas rush. Her daughter remembers her as an excellent cook who always provided well for her family. She also enjoyed classical music, reading, and bird watching. Since childhood she has spent summers on her family's "Northern Island" off Tenants Harbor. In 2006 Mrs. Vose moved to Maine to be with her daughter and son-in-law. For the last year she has resided at the Cushing Homestead. Predeceased by her husband Charles, a brother Thomas Manning and a sister Phyllis Spitz; Mrs. Vose is survived by her son, Charles E. Vose, III, Esq. of Richmond, California; her daughters, Susan Lucuk of Ansonia, Connecticut, Margaret Noga and her husband Francis of Weare, New Hampshire, Holly Doody and her husband Roy of Cushing; eight grandchildren Tim Remaly and his wife Stella of Oxford, CT, Sharon Fearnley and her husband Tim of Ansonia, CT, Diane Reilly and her husband, Kevin of Seymour, CT, Jeanine Darling of Orland, FL, Debbie Benn and her husband Michael of Titusville, FL, Janet Noga and Katherine Noga both of Weare, NH and Jill Doody and her husband Gabe McGuigan of Brandon, VT; as well as 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 20, 2009 at St. James Episcopal Church, Federal Street, Greenfield, MA. Interment will follow immediately in Federal Street Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
