Frances Shaw Obituary

Frances L. Shaw died unexpectedly at the home of her daughter, Daryl Hahn, in Thomaston on May 5 at age 95. Frances was born in Portland on June 30, 1917. She was the daughter of Walter and Janie Libby of Portland and Scarborough. Frances graduated from Deering High School and attended the Portland School of Art. Because of her father’s early death in 1936, she felt she needed to give up her art schooling and find a job to assist her mother and brother. Fran met her future husband, Delmar D.Shaw, Jr., when she and her mother and brother moved to Scarborough. The two were married in Romona, California, in 1941 and later returned to Maine where Del began a 31-yeat career with New England Telephone Co. Fran and Del raised three children: Susan (Auglis) of Scarborough, Brian of Black Mountain, North Carolina, and Daryl (Hahn) of Thomaston. Del’s job had the family moving frequently throughout the state, but after his retirement he and Fran settled in Cape Elizabeth which they enjoyed for nearly 25 years. Fran continued to paint throughout her life, sharing her accomplished seascapes with friends and family. She also loved working in her colorful rock garden and in later years enjoyed the exercise of a round of golf. Frances was predeceased by her husband in 2006. She is survived by her three children, three grand children: Rebecca Millett of Cape Elizabeth, Jennie Hahn of South Portland and Michael Hahn of Seattle, Washington and four great grand children: Hannah and Christopher Kobel of Cape Elizabeth and Simon and Teddy Brainerd of South Portland. Fran will be interred at Black Point cemetery in Scarborough at a later date.
