Joseph Long Obituary

Joseph Edmond Long, 92, passed away peacefully in Venice, Florida on January 21, 2014. He was born on December 23, 1921 in Arlington, Virginia to Levi S. Long and Margaret Flaherty. Joe married his beautiful wife Shirley on August 20, 1942. He always said that is was the best thing that ever happened to him. He joined the United States Navy and was active duty from March 13, 1940 until March 17, 1946. Afterward, he continued his career in the Naval Reserve, where he retired after an additional 20 years of service. He retired as an aviation mechanic with a final rank of Chief. Joe enjoyed many hobbies in his spare time, including boating, gardening and baseball. After retirement he spent his winters in Florida, until he moved there permanently 3 years ago. Joe was predeceased by his wife Harriett Shirley Long in 2011. He is survived by two sons: Joseph Michael Long and his wife Olga of North Port, Florida and David Leon Long and his wife Nancy of Killingworth, Connecticut. 5 grandchildren Elisa, Judy, J. Eric, Kevin and Erin 9 great grandchildren Brittney, Samantha, Rebeka, Leah, Alex, Katelyn, Kaiden, Allison and Sarina. A grave side service will be held on June 28th, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ridge Cemetery, Martinsville, Maine.
