HAMLIN--- Frances E. Morrow, 89, died after a brief illness on Apr. 9, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor. She was born May 12, 1923 in Van Buren, the daughter of Frederick and Homerine (Keegan) Murphy. As a child she enjoyed annual family car trips and summers at her aunt’s camp in Sinclair. She claimed she was a tomboy and loved to talk about her childhood on Pine Street. Frances also enjoyed playing tennis and bowling. She was a 1940 graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Van Buren. She worked at her father’s bowling alley growing up, and became the Maine State women’s bowling champion at only 17. She also worked at her aunt’s theatre in Van Buren, the Gaiety, for a number of years. While there she became the first female projectionist licensed in the state of Maine. She considered herself a “town girl,” and was reluctant to move to the Morrow family farm, but she grew to love it and refused to consider ever moving back to town. After raising three children she became a Headstart school teacher in Hamlin. She worked there for 18 years, and was the director of the school at the time she retired. Many former students thrilled at seeing her in later years showing her much appreciation and love. She also earned a degree from the University of Maine, Orono during that time. Frances loved playing cards and Scrabble, doing crosswords, as well as hiking and skiing behind the farm and spending summers at the camp at Long Lake. Her greatest joy in life was her family, her children and grandchildren, as well as the many nieces and nephews and their children. She especially loved the large Morrow Family reunions, coordinating accommodations locally for many family members that traveled from afar. Frances is survived by her husband of 65 years, Armand Morrow of Hamlin; two sons, Robert Morrow and his wife Patricia of Amelia Island, FL, Leigh Morrow and his wife Patricia of Washburn and; one daughter, Gail and her husband Bruce Fernald of Brewer; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric, Kate, Alex, Hannah, Hilary, and Caleb; and five great grandchildren, Alison, Ethan, Gabriella, Megan, and Frances. She was very fond of her brother and sister’s children, Collenn, Renee, John and Andrea. Frances easily won her way into the hearts of everyone she met. She was predeceased by her mother Homerine and father Frederick, brother Russell Murphy and sister Kathleen Lebrun.
