James Gergely Obituary

James R. “Jim” Gergely, Sr., 72, of Waldoboro passed away on March 3, 2017 at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockport after a short illness. He was the loving husband of Sally (Genthner) Gergely with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage. Jim was born on October 28, 1944 in Trinidad, Colorado, he was the son of the late John and Dorothy Gergely. Jim attended Trinidad Catholic School in Colorado and earned his GED in the Navy. He enlisted in 1962 and served on the destroyer USS Hugh Purvis. In 1966 Jim married Sally Genthner of Waldoboro. He began working at General Dynamics in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1973 his family moved to Waldoboro, Maine where he was a plumber at Jameson’s Inc. for 37 years upon retirement. Jim loved visiting his family in Colorado and as a boy would visit his Grandmother on the beautiful Prairie in Ludlow, Colorado. He loved playing poker with his sons and traveling to casinos, where he was quite lucky at times. He was a good friend and neighbor to everyone and would help out with plumbing, plowing or any other job that needed to be done. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his sister Virginia and husband William Strong, his brother Frank (Buddy), his brother-in-law John DeVey and sister-in-law Sue Genthner. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Jim and wife Trenia of Waldoboro, Jeff and companion Reney of South Carolina and like a son, Steve Wright and companion Mary of Vermont. Granddaughters Heather Davis and husband Nate of Vermont, Samantha Parker and companion Butch of Friendship, and Melissa Parker of Rhode Island. Great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Smith and Aleah Davis of Vermont, Lucy Waite of Friendship, brother John and wife Helen of Arizona, sister Dorothy DeVey of Florida and sister-in-law Marge Gergely of New York, also wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends and his beloved dog Suzette.
