Walter Anthony Kufera Obituary

On September 28, 2017, Walter Anthony Kufera Sr. entered his heavenly home after a long battle with heart disease. Walter was the son of the late Walter Kufera and Jane Kufera (Turowski). Walter was born on June 10, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. During his life, he resided in Baltimore, Edgewood, Pennsylvania, Ocean City, Chincoteague, Myrtle Beach, and Hagerstown. During his life, Walter worked hard to provide for his family. He worked for Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point for forty-four years in the blast furnace and as a foreman. Previously he worked for White Westinghouse and most recently for Weis Markets. Walter had a love for the water. He enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay. He also enjoyed fishing and crabbing. Walter was skilled in using his hands to build and repair. He loved to work on projects around the house. For years, he worked on an addition to his home in Pennsylvania. He also maintained his own cars and passed that knowledge down to his two sons. Walter will be remembered as a gentle, loving man who adored his family. He took great pride in his sons and daughter, in his daughter-in-law and son-in-law, and in his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He is survived by his son, Walter Anthony Kufera Jr. and his wife Shirley of Jarrettsville, and his daughter Jennifer Elyse Karn (Kufera) and her husband David of Hagerstown. He is also survived by grandchildren Ashley Nicole Reese (Kufera) and husband Sam, Elyse Lorraine Kufera, Noah Edward Karn, Emma Carol-Marie Karn and great-granddaughter Sophia Bobbi Reese. He is also survived by brother Joseph Kufera and sisters Dolores Krysiak (Kufera) and husband Joseph and Jane Bury (Kufera) and husband Peter and by his brother-in-law John Tyszkiewicz as well as many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years Roberta Carol Kufera and by his youngest son Christopher Jon Kufera. He was also preceded in death by his sister Rosalie Tyszkiewicz (Kufera). A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 21, at 10 am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hagerstown, MD. Reverend Ernest Cibelli will preside. The family asks that in lieu of flowers to please consider making a donation in Walter’s name to the following organizations: Hospice of Washington County, Hagerstown Community Rescue, or The American Heart Association. In his final days Walter received exceptional care from the nurses and staff of Hospice. They were an invaluable support to the family during a most difficult time. For the past year, as Walter’s health failed, Hagerstown Community Rescue made many trips to assist Walter or took him to the hospital. They were always compassionate and comforting. Walter lived with heart disease for many years. We pray that one day, with help from the American Heart Association, improved treatments for heart disease can be discovered.
