Elijah Gibbs Jr.

God called Elijah Gibbs Jr. home on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge, MD. Elijah was born on January 9, 1935 to the late Lula Bell Gibbs-Gadson and Elijah Gibbs, Sr. in Hollywood, South Carolina. He was educated in the Whaley School System in Hollywood, South Carolina. Elijah relocated to Maryland, making his home in Hurlock, MD in the early 1950’s, where he formed a brotherly bond that would last a lifetime with Leon Malone and Joseph Adams. He was employed at numerous factories until he gained employment in 1971 at General Foods, Inc. in Dover, DE. After many years of service he retired in 1998. Elijah was a faithful member of Hurlock United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men. Elijah was a member of Prospect Lodge # 95 in Preston, MD and the Sons of the American Legion in Easton, MD. On October 23, 1965 he was joined in holy matrimony to Velma Thomas. From this union were two sons and three daughters. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 47 years, Velma; his children, Jody Gibbs (Sandy) Bronx, NY, Renee McKenzie (James) Wilmington, DE, Davina Gibbs, Hurlock, MD, Jeffery Gibbs, Bridgeville, DE and Sonya Gibbs, Cambridge, MD; two sisters, Mary Lou Gibbs and Esther Mundy (Robert) of Charleston, SC and one brother, Willie (Evelyn), Hurlock, MD; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also survived by an aunt, Mazie Moultrie (Jefferson) Young Island, SC; three sisters-in-law, and two brothers- in- law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, step father-Sidney Gadson, brother, Robert Gibbs and Grand- daughter, JaTare Gibbs. He will be greatly missed by his friends at the Russell's Barber Shop and Stop Shop in Hurlock, MD as well as his Brooklyn Avenue friends in Federalsburg, MD.
