Gloria Rideout Obituary

It all began on May 2,1929 in a little town named Drawbridge, Maryland, when I was blessed to be born to the late Granville and Grace B. Chase Pinder. I was the only child for many years. They named me Gloria Delores. When I was around the age of six, I think, we moved to Vienna, Maryland. Living on a. big farm with so much space I know then there would be a lot of work to do. Pinder ( is what I called my dad) and Gray ( is what I called my mom) raised me in a Christian home filled with love, good food, caring for others and a love for God. So it was no surprise that at an early age I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. I became a member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church were I was an active participant in many youth programs. As my years past by, I attend Elementary School and High School in Dorchester Country. During this time I developed a friendship with Regina Murray-Bernard. Guess what? We remained friends. In today's language you would say we are (BFF). I graduate from Frederick Douglass St. Clair High School in 1946. A year after my graduation, I was no longer the only child. Along came a brother (Granville) and a sister (Patsy). And I was blessed with a child (Sherwood). Now a new kind of life was beginning. and work to be done. For many years I worked on Dorco Farms with my cousins. This time together was a time for us to enjoy each other's company as well as putting in a good day's work. From hoeing the fields back in Florida to picking the farm's crops. Spending time with family was very important to me. The laughter, cooking, family unions and having out of town aunts, uncles and cousins to visit at the "farm house" were the times I looked forward to each summer. In 1959, I married Oliver Rideout, Sr. and became a mother to his son Oliver" Buster" Rideout, Jr. Becoming a member of the Reids Grove Family was very rewarding. I was told by a man we called Bum White that once you come to the ( Grove) you never leave the ( Grove). He was right! I enjoyed visiting all the ( Grove) family members, the cookouts (you know I loved to eat and there was nothing better then a good old piece of fried chicken) and having so many nieces, nephews to call me Aunt Gloria or Cousin Gloria filled my heart with joy. I retired from farm work and went to work at Harper and Bateman Pickle Company in Hurlock, Maryland. After twenty some years at the pickle company I retired and began going to the Senior Center in Hurlock. I enjoyed helping in the kitchen at church for many years ( guess I got that talent from my mother). I thoroughly felt blessed giving and helping others and especially those in need. But as you can see now, slowing down was never an option for me. Hobbies, I really had none except SHOPPING! Bus trips to a mall or going to Glen Burnie with my shopping buddy Pearl Lee was truly enjoyment for me. Tough there were times I was not feeling well, I kept it between myself and God and kept right on working. Why you may ask? Because slowing down was not for me. Heave a special thanks to all my family members and friends for letting me be me. Also a special thanks for the care givers in the ( Grove) for helping me in my time of sickness. I leave thoughts of me in the hearts of my beloved son, Sherwood (Wanda) stepson Oliver"Buster" Rideout; grandchildren Vernell, Keavon, Latosha, Chenaneka, Lacole and Craig; 12, great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; brother, Granville; sister, Patsy; aunt, Lillian Anderson; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Rideout, Emma Jackson and Amelia Rideout; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of relatives and friends. My beloved, if doing your work for the Lord you ever tempt to slow down, please remember that slowing down is not an option!
