AUBURN-Edward P. “Eddie” Gilmartin, 77, of Auburn and Popponesset, died Monday, February 6, 2012 at the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, after an illness. Eddie was a well known area master plumber, as the longtime time owner of Gilmartin Plumbing & Heating of Auburn for 50 years, as well as working as the Town of Auburn Plumbing and Gas Inspector for many years. He is lovingly survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Lou (O’Connor) Gilmartin; their six children, Edward Gilmartin, Jr. of Boston, Lt. Col. Robert Gilmartin, US Army and his wife Lt. Col. M. Kathy Gilmartin of Falls Church, VA; Matthew Gilmartin and his wife Molly of Sudbury, Kathleen M. Prunier and her husband Adrien of Spencer, Brian Gilmartin and wife Carla of Auburn, and Colleen M. Moynihan and her husband James of Clayton, NC; his 11 grandchildren, Connor, Meaghan, Liam Gilmartin, Abigail, Michaela and Kelly-Lynn Gilmartin, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Prunier, Sean and Margaret Gilmartin, and Brady and Reagan Moynihan; his former daughter-in-law, Elisa Gilmartin-Davis of Sudbury; his siblings, William and his wife Ruth of Falmouth and Naples, Fl, John Gilmartin and his wife Frances of Worcester, Barbara DeMarco of Tequesta, FL, Bernard Gilmartin and his wife June of Stuart, FL, his sisters-in-law, Nancy Gilmartin of Aurore, Ont. Canada and Ann Gilmartin of Port Charlotte, FL; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Robert, Paul and Richard. He was born in raised in Worcester, a son of the late Bernard and Louise (Holmquist) Gilmartin and has lived in Auburn for many years. He graduated from South High School. Eddie was a longtime member of the North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn, where he served as an usher at the 8:30 AM Sunday Mass for many years. He served his community in several ways through the years, including as a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Rotary Club of Auburn, and as a Town Meeting Member for Precinct 3. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Plumbing Association. He enjoyed gardening, his dogs, spending his free time at the Cape and was known as a master firewood stacker. He especially loved when he was able to spend time with his children and grandchildren playing sports. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Eddy’s family on Friday, February 10th from 4-7 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Saturday, February 11th at 9:45 AM and then celebrate his funeral Mass at 11 AM in the North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Jimmy Fund c/o Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284-9168.
