Anne Howard Karri-Davies was born in Boston on December 25, 1916, and died peacefully in her sleep on June 16, 2011. She was the first born daughter of Ruth Gaston and John K. Howard, granddaughter of William A. Gaston, founder of Gaston & Snow law firm in Boston, and great-granddaughter of Massachusetts Governor William Gaston and William Merry Davis Howard of San Francisco.
Always known as “Annabelle”, she attended Beaver Country Day School and then Foxcroft School in Middleburg Virginia, graduating in 1934. She spent a year in Europe and studied art in Florence, Italy. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1939, she worked as a special assistant to Nelson Rockefeller when he was coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
On her birthday in 1943, she married Walter T.C. Karri-Davies in Washington D.C. while he was working for the British Secret Service. They moved to Riverside, Connecticut in 1949 where they raised their daughter Sheila, and Walter became an International Banker for Morgan Guaranty and a board member of the International Monetary Fund. Annabelle had a passion for giving wonderful parties for their large circle of friends and business associates. She was a gourmet cook; her Crème Brule and chocolate pot de crème were special hits at her many parties over the years. She and Walter loved ballroom dancing and belonged to The Field Club in Greenwich, CT and The Essex County Club and The Singing Beach Club in Manchester, MA.
Upon retiring in 1969, Walter and Annabelle moved to Sotogrande, Spain where they both enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming and a vibrant social life. However, they always returned to Annabelle’s family home on Proctor Street in Manchester in the summers, until 1991, when they returned there permanently.
After Walter’s death in 1992, Annabelle kept her focus on her family, always hosting traditional family gatherings every Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. Her extended family was her joy. And, she loved and was adored by her miniature poodles, most recently Topsy and Alexi.
She is survived by her sister Patricia Howard Pittore of Rockport, MA and Florida, her daughter Sheila Gaston Karri-Davies Howard of Leesburg, Florida, grandsons Alex and Grayson Levis, 8 nieces and nephews and 13 great nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her brother John Howard, his wife Ines, and her sister Jean “Jeannie” (Howard) Gaston Wadsworth and her husband Charles Wadsworth. She is also survived by her devoted housekeeper and caregiver of 30 years Flordeliza “Dely” Beloy; and by Alida Bryant, her close friend and trusted advisor for 20 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Avenue, Salem, MA 01970, or to The Vincent Club, 71 Brimmer Street, Boston, MA 02108, where she was a life member. A Service will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Emmanuel Church, Masconomo Street, Manchester, MA.
