Obituary for Archibald Sommerville

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA - Archibald “Archie” Sommerville, 83, beloved husband of the late Helen Sommerville, passed away on Friday, June 24th at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 27, 1933, he is the son of the late Archibald Twaddle Sommerville and Mary Taylor (Day) Sommerville.

Archie was raised in Glasgow and moved to the United States with his wife Helen and son Charles in 1965. He formerly owned Scotia Machine Company and was a recognized master machinist on the North Shore who was often engaged to solve and execute the most complicated manufacturing jobs. He also mentored many young machinists over his career.

He was a 32nd Degree Free Mason, Distinguished Past Master of the Manchester Lodge A.F. & A.M. and had recently received his 50 year service award. He was a member of the Valley of Salem Scottish Rite and a member of Aleppo Shriners Temple of Massachusetts. He was an invaluable member of the fraternity and an inspiration to the craft.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, watching Boston sports teams, solving cryptoquotes, crossword puzzles and sudoku puzzles, and was an avid golfer in his younger years. He was a veteran of the British Merchant Navy, having served as a Third Engineer.
He is survived by his son Charles Sommerville, his wife Wendee and their daughter Avery of Wilton, CT, and a sister, June Swanson (Sommerville) of England. He is predeceased by his sister, Mary Hogg (Sommerville) and his infant daughter Helen Atkinson Sommerville.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Parish Church, Congregational in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Friday, September 17 at 11:00 AM.
