Obituary for Edward J. McFadden

Edward J. McFadden age 95 , died Monday May 3, 2017 at Beverly Hospital. He was husband of the late Ruth (Sherman) McFadden. Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA the son of Joseph and Harriet (Rapp) McFadden. He married Ruth Sherman in 1942 and the couple shared 63 years of marriage, until her death in 2005. As a young man he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a clerk. During World War II Ed joined the U.S. Navy shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the early days of the war he taught gunnery at Great Lakes, Ill. Later Ed served in the Pacific on the USS Moale as a Gunner’s Mate First Class. This vessel saw action in several battles, including the invasion of the Philippines. After the war his ship also visited Japan and they were observers of the atomic bomb tests on Bikini Island.

After returning home in 1946, Ed continued his career, working as a cost accountant for Sylvania in Pennsylvania and in Danvers, MA. He later worked for Sweetheart Plastics in Wilmington, MA. He and Ruth moved their family to Beverly, MA in the late 1950s where they raised their four children. They joined First Baptist Church of Beverly where Ed participated in the choir and served on several boards and committees, including the original board of Harborlight Nursery School. Recently he was the Resident Representative on the Turtle Woods Board of Directors in Beverly, where he lived for the last six years of his life. Ed enjoyed playing cards and golfing with friends and was a great fan of the Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

Although Ed and Ruth made their home at many different places, including Spokane, WA, New Jersey and Florida, they most loved Martha’s Vineyard - “the Island” - where they shared a home with their daughter Janet McFadden.

He is survived by a daughter, Janet McFadden of Martha’s Vineyard, three sons and their families. Edward and Terri McFadden of Beverly, Paul and Kathy McFadden of Hampton, NH, and Douglas McFadden of Maine, four grandchildren, Mike McFadden and his wife Jen, Julie Karaganis and her husband Jerry, Ross McFadden and Kalee McFadden, two great grandchildren, Isabella and Nicolas Karaganis and dear friends Anne Damon and Jack Martin. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Boogar.
