Obituary for Harriette C. Firth

Harriette Campbell Firth, whose love of family and friends led her to travel the world, died peacefully in her sleep, August 8th, 2011, at her home at Sunrise Assisted Living in Burlington, Mass after a brief illness.

She was born September 23, 1923 in Pelham Manor, New York, the only daughter of Clarence George Campbell and Florence Lawrence Campbell. The youngest of four, she attended Pelham High School and Mary Washington Secretarial College.

She lived and worked in Manhattan, Annapolis, MD and Pittsburgh, PA before marrying Lewis Gerald Firth Jr. on August 21, 1953. After a 6 week European honeymoon, she set up house at Springbank, Roslyn Harbour, NY. With her husband, she moved to Brazil in 1975 where she began teaching English as a second language. In 1977, they returned to Pasadena California where she became a buyer for the United Nations Gift Shop and an active Volunteer at the Pasadena Soup Kitchen. In 1987, she was awarded the UN Peace Metal for her contributions to the United Nations.

A lifelong member of Trinity Church Roslyn, NY, she was a devoted Sunday School teacher and supported her husband on the vestry.

A gourmet cook, she enjoyed gardening, music and needle-point, reading, dancing and above all travelling. An avid sailor, both leisure and racing, she and her family sailed all over the world including the Caribbean, Greece, South America and Tahiti.

She is survived by her daughters Letitia Firth Andrewartha and Daphne Firth.; a son, Lawrence Gerald Firth and five grandchildren, Jennifer Laine Gabrielski, Christopher David Andrewartha, Lindsey Anne Gabrielski, Elizabeth Clare Andrewartha and Lauren Nicole Firth.

A memorial service will be held celebrating her life on Tuesday, August 16th at 10AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 705 Hale St. in Beverly Farms, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to Childfund International, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294
