Obituary for Helen E. Farmer

Helen E. Farmer, 92, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by family. She is the wife of the late Maurice E. Farmer, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Salem on October 6, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Spiros and Theresa (Lempesis) Dragonas/Dragon. She lived most of her life in Beverly where she raised her five children and later retired with her husband to Clearwater, Florida and North Hyde Park, Vermont.

Well known on the North Shore as an accomplished dress maker and seamstress, Mrs. Farmer was self-taught and designed and created costumes for the Dorothy Darling Dance Studio in Beverly, wedding ensembles, upholstery and draperies. She also had worked as a tailor for Johnny Appleseed’s of Beverly. If you could put a needle in it, a nail in it or a paintbrush on it, she could do it! In her later years, she studied to become a certified nurse’s assistant and retired from Danvers State Hospital where she worked for more than ten years before moving to Clearwater, FL to enjoy her husband’s retirement years.

The family would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the wonderful staff of Landmark at Oceanview in Beverly.

Helen is survived by her five children Maurice ”Moe” Farmer and his wife Tammy of North Hyde Park, Vermont; Robert Farmer and his wife Anne of Beverly; Theresa Mikszenas and her husband Richard of Clearwater, FL; Peter Farmer and his wife Sandra of Prides Crossing and Curtis Farmer and his wife Barbara of Marblehead, her grandchildren Jane Leahy of Beverly, Rebecca Sahagian of Marblehead, Jaquelyn Smith of Idaho Springs, CO, Tyler and Jessica Farmer of St. John, USVI, Kyle and Alex Farmer of Marblehead; and Michael, Rachel and Emily Sylvester of No. Hyde Park, Vermont. She also leaves six great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her siblings William Dragon, Anastasia Dragon Nezeriotis, Hope O’Day Vitale and Catherine “Rena” Snyder.
