Obituary for Henry Arnett Desmond

Mr. Henry A. Desmond, of Danvers and formerly of Beverly, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at the Ledgewood Rehabilitation Care Center after a brief illness; he was 88. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (McHugh) Desmond, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Beverly, he was the son of the late Dr. Frederick and Muriel (Publicover) Desmond. Henry enlisted into the U.S. Navy in December, 1943, as a senior at Beverly High School. Following his graduation in 1944, he served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Narragansett, and received a number of medals including World War II Victory Medal, an American Area Ribbon, and an Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon 1 Star. Henry was honorably discharged in May, 1946.
A mechanic by trade, Henry worked with the Beverly Fire Department and Sawtelle Brothers. Following his retirement from Sawtelle Brothers, he worked with his brother Richard and other family members at the Desmond Yacht Yard. Henry enjoyed boating, fishing and time spent on the water, and also enjoyed traveling, which included trips to Ireland and Costa Rica. Above all, he enjoyed time spent with his family and grandchildren. Henry will be remembered by neighbors, friends and family for his generosity, compassion, sense of humor, and willingness to help anyone who needed a hand.
He is survived by his daughter Julie Piazza and her husband Michael of Woburn; his son John Desmond and his wife Lisa Amore of Danvers (with whom he lived), grandchildren Marissa, Kristen and Cameron Piazza of Woburn, Shannon and Jack Desmond of Danvers; and several nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his brother, Richard Desmond of Beverly. He was predeceased by his brothers Frederick and Paul Desmond.
Services with military honors will be held privately. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Ledgewood Rehab and Care Center, Resident Activity Fund, 87 Herrick Street, Beverly, MA 01915.
