Obituary for Irma Lucia DiBenedetto (Laspisa)

SOUTH HAMILTON - Irma died peacefully in her sleep on 9/11/2015 at the age of 97. She was born February 16, 1918 in Pratola Peligna, in the province of L’Aquila, Italy to Lorenzo & Angela (nee Brandolini) Tarantelli and was one of 10 children. In 1946 she married Ettore “Hector” Di Benedetto (deceased), also of Pratola Peligna. She is survived by: two sisters, Raphael and Assunta, both living in Italy; her daughter, Gaetana “Nella” Coates and her husband Larry, both of South Hamilton, MA; Irma’s son, Cesidio “Chet” Di Benedetto and his wife Diana (De Frank), of Eastlake, Ohio. Irma is survived by 4 grandchildren: Cesidio “Cesi” Di Benedetto and his wife Jennifer (Ishmael) of Cincinnati, OH; Lisa (Di Benedetto) Knapp and her husband Ray of Mentor, OH; Angela Coates of Scottsdale, AZ; Griff Coates and his wife Kathleen (Lyons) of Salem, MA, 3 great grand-daughters: Julianna Rose Di Benedetto, Ella Reese Coates and Anna James Coates.
Irma came to the USA with her two children in 1952 at the age of 34 and was reunited with her husband who had come to the US five years earlier to get established here. She worked hard to help support her family & retired to Phoenix in the 70’s and lived there until Hector’s death in 1985. She later married Frank Laspisa and lived in Phoenix until his death in 1998. She has lived in South Hamilton, MA with her daughter and son-in-law since that time.
Irma has been known to so many people in the Hamilton and Wenham community as the “dear old lady walker” because until slightly before she turned 97 she managed to walk on almost all good days, and some not so good days, for anywhere from 3 to 4 hours at a time! In addition to walking Irma loved to cook, bake, and garden and she believed that nothing was as good as freshly picked items from her garden. We will never forget her biscotti and scrappel, not to mention her homemade pasta and bread!
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 3 - 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Hamilton, 624 Bay Road, Hamilton, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Arizona.
