Manchester-by-the-Sea - Isabel (Izzy) Barton Young, 53, beloved wife of David M. Young, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 20, 2017 in Washington, D.C., while traveling with her husband.
Born in Beverly, she was the daughter of Randolph P. and Maud (Palmer) Barton of North Andover. She was raised in Beverly Farms and Manchester-by-the-Sea and graduated from Shore Country Day School in Beverly, class of 1978. She continued her education at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, class of 1981 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science from the University of Virginia in 1985.
Throughout her life Izzy courageously dealt with epilepsy and other health challenges. Somehow she always found a way to persevere and still do the things that she loved to do, without drawing attention to the hardship she endured.
In her teens, Izzy was an accomplished sailor and racer in boats of all sizes. She actively raced her red Laser and Rhodes 19 for many years, winning many trophies along the way. Some of her proudest achievements included five wins of the Manchester Yacht Club Crocodile Cup, signifying the best woman racer in the fleet. She also had a passion for windsurfing, which later became instrumental in bringing her together with her husband.
Izzy was a devoted and loving mother and wife. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially outdoors. They enjoyed nature in Massachusetts and throughout the U.S., with trips to 15 national parks: Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Badlands, Crater Lake, Hawaii Volcanoes, Haleakala, Theodore Roosevelt, Redwoods, Sequoia, Petrified Forest, and Acadia. In addition, they enjoyed many skiing trips in the winter and kayaking and hiking adventures in the summer.
Izzy was also passionate about her pottery. She was a supporter and member of the Clay Dreaming Pottery Studio where she loved immersing herself in clay. She was one of the main potters from the studio who contributed her time and talent to annually crafting ceramics for The Empty Bowl Dinner fundraiser.
She was an enthusiastic Red Sox fan and found joy in the simple things in life. She embraced life to the fullest and brought joy to those around her through her sense of humor and her vibrant smile. Her generosity was legendary; she gave of herself often and to many. Those close to her will always carry a piece of her with them.
In addition to her husband, with whom she shared twenty-eight years of marriage, and her parents, she is survived by her children, Adrienne Young and Jarrod Young, both of Manchester-by-the-Sea, two brothers, Robert Barton and his wife, Leslie, of Newburyport and William Barton and his wife, Anne, of Hamilton, and a niece and three nephews.
Her memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 705 Hale Street, Beverly Farms, Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the Epilepsy Foundation, 8301 Professional Place, Suite 200, Landover, MD 20785 (www.epilepsy.com
