Jean Blackburn Wood

Jean B. Wood, 88, of South Hamilton, MA, died July 6, 2015 with family at her side, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Born in Springfield, MA, Jean was the daughter of the late George V. and Vera (Healy) Blackburn. She grew up in Feeding Hills (Agawam), MA and attended Boston University where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. After graduating from BU, Jean taught at Kents Hill School in Maine and at Kingston, MA High School. She married Norman Wood of Feeding Hills on February 16, 1952 and together they raised their daughter Sylvia. Jean continued her career by teaching kindergarten in Rehoboth, MA, and after moving to Vermont in 1962, she started Country Kindergarten in her home in Essex Junction. In 1966 she and Norman settled in South Hamilton where she began teaching preschool students at Christ Church Parish Day School which she continued for many years. In the late 70’s after a move to Texas, Jean worked as a substitute teacher in Grand Prairie TX. After retiring, Jean worked and volunteered at the Hamilton Library and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hamilton. She had a lifelong love of the arts, was an avid book reader and attended and listened to countless classical music concerts, especially opera. Jean was married to Norman for 57 years until his death in 2009.
Survivors include her daughter Sylvia Hendee and husband Richard of Freeport, Maine; grandson Scott Hendee also of Freeport; her sister Norma Cook of Endwell, New York; her brother The Reverend Elliot Blackburn and his wife Helen of Mason City, Iowa; and eleven nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 391 Bay Road, Hamilton on Saturday, July 18th at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Memorial donations may be made in Jean’s Memory to the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library, 14 Union St., S. Hamilton, MA 01982 or The Community House of Hamilton and Wenham, 284 Bay Rd., S.
