Obituary for Kevin E. O'Grady

Kevin O'Grady, 68 years
Education Administrator, Pioneer in Special Education

After living with a brain tumor for eleven years, Kevin finally picked up his paddle and let the current take him down river. Born in New York City, he graduated from St. Francis High School, Brooklyn, where he made his mark as a track star. Kevin earned a place in the 1961 World Almanac for his performance in the 2-mile relay at the indoor National Interscholastic Track Championships. His team set a national record. A graduate of St. Francis College, Kevin moved to Massachusetts in 1967 and completed his M. Ed. at Tufts University where he met his wife, Cynthia.

Kevin was recognized as a pioneer in Special Education. In 1973 he created the first program that allowed students from state institutions to transition into public schools. After three years as the Principal of the Hogan Regional Center in Danvers, Kevin went on to become the Executive Director of the Northshore Education Consortium (NEC) from 1974-2002.

Over nearly 30 years, Kevin managed the educational needs of thousands of children and young adults with autism, medical impairments, learning delays and severe emotional disabilities, on the North Shore and beyond. He was a staunch advocate, responding to changing needs and creating new programs and educational opportunities for the children and families he cared so deeply about.

Following Kevin's retirement, the Board of Directors of NEC honored him by naming both a children’s center and a school after him. The Board also established the Kevin O'Grady Award, to be presented annually to an individual for their contributions to special education.

Throughout his life Kevin was also passionate about nature and sports. An avid tennis player, he played with the Early Birds at the Bass River Tennis Club for over 30 years and was on the courts three weeks before his passing. A paddler, a skier and a hiker, Kevin trekked throughout Maine and New Hampshire. After his diagnosis he hiked in Alaska, the Galapagos and the Grand Canyon and toured Ireland and Italy by bike.

On Sunday, October 2, 2011 Kevin died at the Kaplan Hospice House, Danvers, surrounded by his loving family - Cynthia, his wife of 42 years, his children Melina and Voula, their partners, Chris Arnold and Encian Pastel, and his grandchildren Niko and Zoe. Kevin is pre-deceased by his parents, Ellen and James O'Grady of Ireland. He leaves behind his sister Marian O'Grady of Florida, his brother James O'Grady and his wife, Margaret of New York and many broken-hearted friends.

Kevin's memorial service will be celebrated on Thursday, October 6 at 11am at the Misselwood tent, Endicott College, 407 Hale St. in Beverly. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly location) on Wednesday, October 5th from 4 to 7pm.
