Mary Worthen Tobey, 93, of Wenham, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, February 24th at Devereux House in Marblehead. Devoted wife of the late J. Lawrence Tobey, she was born in Concord, NH on August 27, 1918 to Joseph Washburn Worthen and Dorothy (Bullard) Worthen. She is survived by her sons Stephen Tobey of Wenham, Michael Tobey of Salem, sister Joanne Latta of Marblehead and daughter-in-law Charlene Tobey of Salem. She is survived also by grandchildren, Elizabeth Turner and husband Gregory of Dover, NH, Catherine Tobey and her fiancé, Christopher Titus of Salem, Alexandra Tobey of Dover, NH, as well as a large extended family.
Raised in Winchester MA, Mary attended Walnut Hill Academy and Wellesley College graduating class of 1940. After graduating she worked for Underwater Sound in support of the war effort as did many of her generation. She married Larry (Tobe) Tobey in 1948 and they began in New Haven, CT, and then moved to Marblehead, before moving finally settling in Wenham in 1958 to raise a family. A communicant of the First Congregational Church of Wenham she was actively involved in fundraising efforts on behalf of Wellesley College. She and Tobe traveled widely vacationing in Europe and the Caribbean. She also enjoyed gardening, playing tennis with friends, and gatherings and celebrations at which she enjoyed playing piano for family and friends. Mary deeply cherished the many summers spent from childhood with family on Lake Memphremagog, Quebec, and at Kinderheim in North Sandwich, NH.
The family expresses their appreciation for the care and comfort Mary received at Spectrum Adult Day Care, The Devereux House, as well as the kind dedication of many personal care givers throughout many years of decline after having being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday March 10th, at the Campbell, Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly location.
