Beverly - Melvin J. “Mel” Deveau Sr., 102, beloved husband of the late Dorothy L. (MacKay) Deveau, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Essex Park Health Care Center in Beverly.
Born and raised in Beverly, he was the son of the late John B. and Mary E. (Thibault) Deveau. He received his education in the Beverly school system and graduated from Beverly High School, class of 1929. He later earned induction into the Sports Hall of Fame at Beverly High School for his dedication as their #1 fan. Mel had not missed a Beverly-Salem Thanksgiving football game since 1920. Mel prided himself as being the presenter of the “Ada Smith Award” also known as the “Unsung Hero Award” each year to a deserving football player. As a young man, he helped to establish the Beverly High School Sports Club and served as President for three years. He was a co-founder of the St. Mary’s Drum and Bugle Corp.
Mel had been self-employed for many years as a fireplace and chimney consultant having installed thousands of chimney caps all over New England, his most memorable atop Mount Washington.
He was survived by his son, Melvin J. Deveau Jr. of Gloucester (who passed away on August 29, 2014), granddaughter, Larissa Lang and her husband, Christopher of Danvers, granddaughter, Leah Deveau, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John-Alfred, Francis, William, John, and Raymond Deveau, and Catherine “Kay” Salkins.
A celebration of Mel’s life, as well as his son’s, will be celebrated at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Sunday, September 14 at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
