Obituary for Richard E. Joly

BEVERLY -Richard E. Joly, 82 years, of Beverly, beloved husband of Grace Mae (Downing) Joly, passed away after a long battle with cancer Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers with his family by his side. With the continuous help of Care Dimensions and a loving family he was able to remain home for the past year.

Richard was born in Salem son of the late Ernest J and Sophie C. (Predki) Joly. He was a graduate of Salem High School in the Class of 1952 of which he was a member of the reunion committee. After high school Richard joined the Army National Guard and served from 1957 to 1961. Mr. Joly’s first job was at the age of sixteen at the First National Stores. He worked for them for 16 years until the strike and its closing. At the age of 34, he began his employment with Schaal Associates in Burlington until the business was sold to the Dean company in Reading which he retired from in 1996. Upon retirement Richard and his wife became snowbirds for 16 years wintering in Melbourne, Florida. Richard enjoyed his vegetable garden, making puzzles, and attending Beverly Athletic Club for over 30 years.

In addition to his wife, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage, he is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Cross and her husband Kevin of Beverly and Suzanne Nolan and her husband Thomas of Rowley; two sons, Mark R. Joly and his wife Kerri of Danvers and Jeffrey Joly and his wife Christina of Lynnfield; Richard also leaves several grandchildren: Joshua Cross and his wife Melissa, Jaime Cross and her fiancé Brian, James Cross and his wife Heidi, Sara Ploss and Fred, Thomas Nolan IV, Michael Nolan, Danielle Joly-Emond and her husband Christopher, Margaret and Madison Joly, and Eric and Celeste Joly. He also leaves great grandchildren; Emma, Bradley, Brady, Matthew, Nathan, Devin, Raffie and Cameron. He was also “Grampy” to Jennifer, Andrew and Dylan. four sisters, Christine (Joly) Connolly of Danvers MA, Louise (Joly) Lawrence of St. Augustine FL, Carol (Joly) Dansreau of Stratham NH and Dorothy (Joly) Arathuzik of Topsfield MA. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Donnie Richard, a life long friend, served in the army with Richard and enjoyed getting together often.

Richard’s memorial service will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly MA on Saturday April 29th, at 4 pm. Visiting hours will be held prior from 2 to 4 pm.
