Obituary for Richard J. Costello

Manchester-by-the-Sea - Richard J. Costello 83, beloved husband of F. Geraldine (Faraca) Costello, died Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly.
Born and raised in Springfield, MA, he was the son of the late William V. and Anna A. (Sullivan) Costello. He graduated from Springfield Technical High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Science from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and from Salem State College, he earned both his Master’s Degree in Education as well as his Master’s Degree in Teaching.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving as a hospital corpsman at Camp Pendleton.
Dick had been a favorite chemistry and earth science teacher to generations of students, as well as head of the Science department at Manchester Jr-Sr High School. He retired after 35 years of teaching and learning, in 1994.
A resident of the Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea since 1978, he served on the town’s ADA Committee. Dick was an avid gardener, an opera lover and enjoyed photography, creative writing, painting, playing piano, traveling and was a friend of “Bill W.” He loved life, was soft-spoken, fair and easy going, and was appreciated for his humor and positive outlook.
In addition to his wife, with whom he shared fifty-one years of marriage, he is survived by his daughter, Susan Costello of Manchester, his son, Steven Costello and his wife, Mary Beth of Salem, three grandchildren, Bobby and Zane Costello of Salem and Giuseppe Tra of Manchester, a sister, Mary Elaine Carter and her husband, Jack of Michigan and a brother, William Costello Jr. of Springfield.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 62 School Street, Manchester by the Sea, Saturday, December17, 2016 at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, Friday from 4 - 7 p.m. Burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea.
