Obituary for Robert Nichols Schutz

Robert Nichols Schutz, of Manchester-By-The-Sea, MA died peacefully in his sleep two weeks short of what would have been his 87th birthday. With his optimistic spirit, Bob lived his life with the things he valued most: family, friends and a curiosity to learn and explore.
The beloved son of Paul and Helen Schutz, Bob was born in Milwaukee, WI on 12/21/1929, where he lived surrounded by the extended family of his mother, especially his "Uncle Will and Aunt Dodie” Nichols, also of Milwaukee. When Bob was eight years old, Bob’s family moved to Short Hills, New Jersey, where he attended high school at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge. A true patriot, Bob joined the US Army 1947 and served honorably for two years. After his military service, Bob was accepted to Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, in Washington, DC. His time at Georgetown was dear to him, forging friendships nurtured over his lifetime.
After graduating from Georgetown, Bob went to work as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Pfizer, an exciting job for a young man that took him to new places, including Canada, where he met and married Dr. Margaret Mackinnon. Offered an opportunity to head a sales team in Argentina, Bob moved with Margaret in the early 1960s to Buenos Aires for three years. This experience formed a deep love of South America and Spain. In fact, after returning to the states and settling in St. James, Long Island, the couple and their four children regularly spoke Spanish and were surrounded by artifacts and reminders of this time in South America. In the early 1970s Bob started a medical records services company, Medical Dictation Associates, which had contracts with major hospitals throughout Long Island and New York City. Bob sold the company and decided - at the age of 40 - to return to school, entering Hofstra University Law School full time. In the mid-1980s Bob embarked on a second career as an attorney, which he continued until retirement.
Bob loved chess, classical music and was an avid reader of non-fiction (especially American History). He was active in numerous notable and successful fundraising and preservation efforts throughout his life that were commemorated via community and Chamber of Commerce awards.
After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2001, Bob moved to Manchester-By-The-Sea, Massachusetts with the family of his beloved daughter, Erika Brown, where he lived the rest of his years. He is survived by his children, Roberta, of Julian, CA; Stephen, of Boise, ID; Karl, of Warner Robbins, GA; and Erika (Schutz) Brown, of Manchester-By-The-Sea, MA. He was also a proud grandfather to Karl, Patrick, Peter, Zoe, Theophilus, George, Donald, Angus and Christine. Bob leaves three of his four siblings: Peter Schutz, of Ft. Smith, AR; Benjamin, of Lucca, Italy; and a sister, Stephanie Huber of Baltimore, MD. He was preceded in death by his youngest brother Thompson Schutz (d., 2002).
A memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2017 for close friends and family. Online condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.
