Mr. Robert W. Whalen 80, beloved husband of Elaine M. (Hubbard) Whalen, died Sunday morning, May 1, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by his family.
Born and raised in Beverly, he was the son of the late William and Daisy (Springer) Whalen. He received his education in the Beverly school system.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his county during the Korean Conflict as a member of the United States Navy.
Mr. Whalen had been employed for twenty eight years as a firefighter for the City of Beverly and was a Captain at the time of his retirement. He was a member of Local #1669 Beverly Firefighters IAFF and the Beverly Firefighters Relief Association.
A longtime resident of Beverly before moving to Danvers, he enjoyed visiting West Beach in Beverly Farms during the summer months with his family. Mr. Whalen was an avid sports enthusiast and was a longtime fan of the Boston Bruins. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, with whom he shared fifty five years of marriage, he is survived by two daughters, Maureen Raftery and her fiancé, Robert Kershaw of Lynn and Karen Hyde and her husband, Timothy of Danvers, two sons, Michael Whalen and his wife, Susan of Danvers and Robert W. Whalen Jr. of Beverly, five grandchildren, Jenna Raftery, Brett Raftery, Sarah Whalen, Brandon Hyde and Lauren Hyde, one sister, Gladys Powers of Peabody, a brother, William Whalen of Ipswich and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Herman Whalen.
His funeral Mass will be held at St. Richard’s Church, Forest Street, Danvers, Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly location) Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Robert’s memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.
