Still River-Brother Leonard Mary, M.I.C.M. (John Frederick Farrell, Jr.) passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 23, 2013 in Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 14, 1921, to the late John Frederick Farrell, Sr. and Clara (Boyle) Farrell, nine months after his hitherto childless mother had prayed for an infant at the shrine of Our Lady of Victories in Boston - a custom much practiced at the time. A graduate of the Harvard University Class of 1942, he served as a Japanese language officer in the US Army during World War II and the subsequent occupation of Japan, at which time he was successively censor of the War Crimes Trials defendants' correspondence and ran the radio stations in northern Honshu and Hokkaido - an experience which gave him a lifelong love of that country and its culture. In 1947, he returned to Cambridge and St. Benedict Centre, at the time Harvard Catholic Student Club. Under the influence of Fr. Leonard Feeney and Sr. Catherine Goddard Clarke, he joined the nascent Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary two years later. The remainder of his life was devoted to the propagation of the Catholic Faith and the defense of the much controverted dogma, Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus. In this pursuit he traveled to all 50 States of the Union and 15 foreign countries, including the Holy See. During this time, he met Pope John Paul II, the Kings of Sweden, Italy, and Rwanda, and from 1999 until his death in 2011, kept a particularly close correspondence with the Archduke Otto v. Habsburg. Brother was present at the beatification of the Emperor Karl in 2004, one of the high points of his life. From 2008 until his death, successive medical problems robbed him of sight and walking, but he remained mentally sharp until the end. The last project he set himself was to pray for literally everyone he had ever met - which he announced he had completed a few weeks before he died. His survivors include Daniel, Mark, Paul, John, and Robert Pomerleau, and Claire Pomerleau Beck, the children of his beloved sister Mary Farrell Pomerleau, who predeceased him last year; his brothers and sisters in the Order; the Catholic Treasures crowd in Southern California; and the countless people whose lives he touched around the globe. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10AM on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at St. Ann’s Chapel, 254 Still River Rd., Still River. Burial will follow in St. Benedict Center Cemetery.
