Obituary for Donald E. Gauthier

Southbridge....Donald E. Gauthier, 73, of Southbridge, passed away on Feb. 6,2009. His wife of 45 years, Jacqueline (McGarrell) Gauthier, died in April, 2007. He was born in Southbridge, the son of the late Valmore and Mary (Brew) Gauthier.


He leaves his sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Maureen and Raymond DeRouin of Auburn, his nephew and his wife, Michael and Marsha Hafferty of Dudley, his niece and her husband, Sharon and Robert Mattus of Millbury, great-nephews Patrick and Andrew


Hafferty, Cameron and Colin Mattus, a great-niece, Kailey Mattus, a godson, Donald Norrnandin of Flagstaff, AZ , several cousins, and his dog, "Bear".


He lived his entire life in Southbridge, and was a member of Notre Dame Church and graduated from the former Mary E. Wells High School and Brom's School of Barbering. He served 4 years in the National Guard, assigned to the Southbridge Armory. He owned and operated Don's Barber Shop, originally on North


Street, and later relocating to Hamilton Street. After closing his business, he was employed at American Optical Company, retiring in 1998.


Don enjoyed candlepin bowling and bowled in several leagues in Southbridge. He also enjoyed playing card games, especially Pitch, Cribbage and Solitaire, and vacationing in Wells, Maine. He was a lifetime Red Sox fan, and enjoyed many sports.


The funeral will be Wednesday from Sansoucy Funeral 40 Marcy Street with a Mass at 10AM in Notre Dame Church 446 Main St. Southbridge. Burial will follow in New Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour will be at the funeral home prior to the mass from 8:45-9:45AM
