Southbridge ...Evelyn L. (Priest) Nichols, 85, of Sayles Street , died Sunday, July 26th, at Lanessa Extended Care in Webster , MA after an illness.
She leaves her beloved husband of 63 years, Charles E. Nichols. They were married April 13, 1946 . She leaves a daughter Debra M. Lavallee and her husband Ronald of Southbridge, and a son Barry W. Nichols and his wife Kathy of Sturbridge. She also leaves three grandchildren, Keith, Corey and Kimberly Nichols, a great-grandson, Mason Nichols, a sister Phyllis Stearns and her husband Willis of Brimfield, a sister-in-law Cliffie Delle Priest of Ocala, Florida and a step sister-in-law Jeannette Jalbert of Southbridge, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Leslie J. Priest who died in 2003.
She was born in Swampscott , MA , daughter of the late Arthur Leslie and Pamelia Stetson ( Peabody ) Priest. In March of 1941, when workers were needed as World War II began, she started her working career at the American Optical Co. while she was still attending high school. She graduated from Mary E. Wells High School, Class of 1941. She was a member of the A.O.'s Quarter Century Club.
She belonged to the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 109 of Fiskdale, was a past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs auxiliary of the International Order of the Odd Fellows and a member of the Southbridge and Sturbridge National Grange, and the Women's Relief Corps. She retired from the American Optical Company in 1984. Mrs. Nichols enjoyed traveling (a highlight was meeting Roy Rogers on a trip out west), board games, cards, crocheting and most of all, her family.
A service will be held on Saturday at 10AM at Oakhill Bible Church, 40 Sacarrappa Road in Oxford , MA . Calling hours will be held on July 30th from 6-8PM at Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St. Southbridge. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery.
