Southbridge...Michael Henry Mendrek, Jr. 72, of Elm Street succumbed to his 10yr. battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was treated at UMass Medical Center Bone Marrow Transplant Unit having had two stem cell transplants. He is survived by his wife Janet (Tieri) Mendrek. He leaves a brother John Mendrek and a sister Barbara Mendrek both of Southampton, MA. His brother John was his stem cell donor for his second transplant. He is also survived by a 3 nephews Steven Mendrek and his wife Diana, and their daughters Leanna, and Kayla Anne of Southampton, MA, William Mendrek and his wife Rona and their children Marty and Brittany of Westfield, MA, and John Mendrek of Southampton, MA. He leaves a cousin James Mendrek and his wife Eileen and their family of Cumberland, RI and Syracuse, NY. He was also the brother-in-law of Dick and Barbara (Tieri) L'Heureux of Southbridge, may nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews, and several cousins. His first wife was the late Elizabeth Horanzy Mendrek of Webster who died in 1995. He was born in Holyoke, May 31, 1936, son of Michael H. and Gertrude (Casavant) Mendrek (formerly of Southbridge) and graduated from Catholic Schools in S. Hadley. He served 2yrs. in the United States Army stationed at Missile Bases across the country. He graduated with a BS from UMass/ Amherst majoring in mathematics, and received a Master's Degree in Industrial Management from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He enjoyed a long career as Manager of Information Systems at Mass Mutual in Springfield, American Optical Co. in Southbridge, Norton Company in Worcester, and Sonolyst in Waterford, CT. Michael enjoyed his large family at birthday cookouts, and at annual "Mendrek Christmas" celebrations. Throughout his life, he enjoyed participating in baseball, tennis, skiing, and boating. Having lived many years on Webster Lake, he spent many a Sunday afternoon taxiing friends over to "Waterfront Mary's" on his old pontoon boat called the "Polish Porch" singing famous German riddles to the children. He was a member of the Nichols Breakfast Club where he enjoyed many Saturday mornings. He also made numerous trips to West Point to attend the annual Army/Navy Football game. He was a connoisseur of fine wines and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with family and large network of supportive and faithful friends.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Friday, Jan. 30th, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11AM in Saint Mary's Church 263 Hamilton Street Southbridge with Rev. Peter Joyce as Celebrant. Burial will follow in OakRidge Cemetery Southbridge. There are no calling hours. Sansoucy Funeral Home 40 Marcy Street Southbridge is directing the arrangements.
