Rita L. Carrier, 91, of Southbridge, Mass., died at Radius Health Care in Southbridge on Monday, Dec 13. She was the widow of Leonide D. Carrier.
Born in Waterbury, CT., the first of four children of the late Wilbrod and Albertine Archambeault, she grew up in Southbridge, where she attended Notre Dame School and Notre Dame High School when it first opened its doors. She was one of only three students in the new high school’s first graduating class, in 1938.
Following graduation, Rita worked at the former People’s Bank in Southbridge until 1941, when she went to work at the former Southbridge Cooperative Bank (now Savers Bank), where she was employed for more than 50 years, first from 1941 until 1950 and later from 1959 until she retired in late 2003 at 84. She also worked for a time at Rudi’s Floral Workshop in Southbridge.
Rita met her future husband before he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War Two. They were married in 1946 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996, 7 years before he passed away in 2003.
She lived at Radius Health Care in Southbridge for several months in 2006 and 2007 before moving into an assisted-living center in Webster, where she lived until July 2008. She moved into a nursing home in Webster at that time, and was relocated to Radius Health Care in Southbridge in late 2008.
Rita’s life centered on her family, her job and her church. As an adult, she was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Southbridge, and attended Mass there regularly until her deteriorating health made it impractical to do so.
She was a whiz with numbers, and sometimes said she wished she could have gone on to college to study business. Rita prepared tax returns for family members and friends until late in life. It was a common sight to find her sitting at the kitchen table with a small notebook in hand, tracking her family budget.
Rita loved to cook and she excitedly bought her first home computer when she was in her late 70s. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as visiting Maine.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Alice Servant.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Paul Carrier and Liz Soares of Augusta, Maine, and David and Carol Carrier of Southbridge; two grandchildren, David Carrier and Jessica Carrier, both of Southbridge; four great-grandchildren, Victoria Carrier and Shelby Carrier of Southbridge and Janai Louyiakis and Blake Joubert, also of Southbridge; a brother, Albert Archambeault of Southbridge; and a sister, Irene Duquette of East Longmeadow.
Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday at the Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St. in Southbridge, followed by a Mass at 11AM at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in the New Notre Dame Cemetery in Southbridge.
