1924-2010

Wilbraham, MA - Alberto M. Zavala, 85, of Wilbraham passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, March 8, 2010. He was born April 8, 1924, a son of the late Artemio and Eva (Sarrio) Zavala in Tarma, Peru, South America. Alberto traveled to the United States where he received his college education, then went to India with his late wife, he later emigrated to the United States settling in Comanche, Iowa and has resided in Wilbraham since 1969. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Baker University in Kansas and his Master’s Degree from the George Peabody School for Teachers in Nashville, TN. Later in life he earned his second master’s degree. Alberto was a lifelong educator and taught Geography, Psychology, Spanish and also taught in the Special Education Program. In the Springfield Public Schools, he taught at Technical, Classical, and Commerce High Schools and retired after 21 years. He took pleasure in working in his yard and being the family handyman. Alberto liked to spend time with his family, and he enjoyed traveling, which included driving cross country on many occasions. He was also an avid sports enthusiast. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Mary Lucy (Wilkinson) Zavala. He leaves his beloved family and friends, 3 daughters, Joy Kinsella and her husband Marco of Glastonbury, CT, Nina Berman and her husband Bill of Wilbraham, and Vida Zavala of Springfield, his grandchildren, Stephanie and Michelle Berman and Liana and Alaina Kinsella, 2 brothers, Solomon and Pablo of Peru, his sisters, Sahara Young of CA , Yolanda Bonsall of UT, Raquel Zavala, and Victoria Lazo of Peru and many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. Visiting hours for Alberto are Friday, March 12, 2010 from 4-7pm at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Rd., Springfield. His Funeral Service is Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 12 noon in Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St. Wilbraham concluding with Committal services in Woodland Dell Cemetery in Wilbraham. Contributions in Alberto’s memory may be sent to a charity of the donors choice.
