Russell A. Bromfield Obituary

Russ Bromfield, age 64, died September 12, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed peacefully with family at his side. Russ is survived by his children Sam of Brooklyn, NY and Miriam of Somerville, MA as well as his brother Chris of Boca Raton, FL, Roy of Irvine, CA and sister Jan Driscoll of Simpsonville, SC. Also surviving Russ are nephew Mark Driscoll and nieces Laura Keogh, Rachael Shuba, Heather Bromfield and Jennifer Bromfield. Born in Stamford, CT on April 18,1951, Russ was active in Stamford Little League baseball and the Boy Scouts (where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout) which likely led to his lifelong passion for sports and the great outdoors. After high school, Russ owned a taxi company during which time he also enjoyed traveling all over the USA and to many exotic destinations across the globe. Later, he earned his bachelor’s degree from UMass Boston in physical education and then became a beloved physical education teacher at the Solomon Schechter Day Lower School in Newton. There, he touched the lives of countless students and coworkers for over 25 years. Most recently, Russ worked at Wheelworks in Belmont, MA where he sold and repaired children’s bicycles and enjoyed his interaction with colleagues and customers. During his 40 years in Cambridge, Russ was active in coaching Little League for the North Cambridge division for many seasons. He was also a skilled fast-pitch softball pitcher for several Cambridge affiliated softball teams which led to many happy memories and longtime friendships. Most recently, he played for the Brattle Theatre softball team. Besides his affection for students, family and friends, Russ always had a soft spot in his heart for dogs. He lovingly cared for Nugget (“Nugs”) and Riley until they passed. His current dog, who is a golden-doodle named Guapo, provided Russ a tremendous amount of joy, affection and comfort. A graveside service will be held on October 24th at 11:00 AM in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Russ’s memory to North Cambridge Little Baseball, 22 Seagrave Rd., Cambridge, MA 02140. Following the ceremony, the family invites all guests to join them in celebrating Russ's life at The Talk Restaurant 116 Main St., Watertown, MA from 12 - 4 PM.
