Obituary for Alfred E. Nugent

Alfred E. Nugent, 79, of Watertown, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and distinguished attorney, passed away Saturday June 7, 2008, at his son Matthew's home in Bedford, Massachusetts with his family by his side. Al was involved in many social, political, civic, educational and charitable causes and organizations throughout his life and was an ardent and lifelong Democrat. He graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1947 and attended Boston University from which he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1952. From 1952-1954 he served in the U.S. Army, Counter Intelligence Corps and was stationed in Germany and for his service he received the National Defense Service and Army of Occupation medals. After his discharge from the Army Al returned to Massachusetts and was admitted to the Bar. Al commenced his career in the law as a Public Defender for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and continued his career as a criminal defense attorney in private practice until his death. Al was a committed defender of the Bill of Rights and worked for social justice and equality throughout his life.Al was formerly a member of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, Massachusetts Association of Trial Attorneys, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Al was also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Massachusetts Bay Community College and Harvard Law School and served as both a trial advisor and a Moot Court Judge for the Trial Advocate Programs at Boston University, Harvard University and Northeastern University law schools and participated in the Boston College Battered Women's Defense Project.Called Grandpa and Grandpa Al by his grandchildren, Al derived great pleasure from his loving and caring relationship with each and joyfully attended their many athletic competitions, dance recitals, plays and birthday parties. Al's Fridays always included calls to schedule weekend visits and events with his grandchildren and family.Al's lifelong passion for reading and education were a source of pride for his family.Al is survived by his loving wife Louise M. (Roche) Nugent, his beloved family, daughters Christine L. Kadison, her husband David and their children Sarah, William and Dylan, of Vineyard Haven and Concord; and Helen M. Nugent, her husband Matthew Smith and their children Roan and Genevieve, of Needham; his four sons Anthony A. Nugent, of Boston; Paul H. Nugent, his wife Clare Gamberoni and their children, twins Gabriella and Aidan, of Newton; Matthew A. Nugent, his wife Nancy Nugent and their children, Colleen and Brian, of Bedford; Kevin B. Nugent, his wife Lori Nugent and their children, Shea and Owen, of Nahant; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews, dear friends and colleagues. The funeral will be held Friday June 13, 2008 from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 6 Riverside Street, Watertown, with a service celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in the Story Chapel of Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, with his burial at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery immediately following.Friends and relatives are invited to visit with his family Thursday, June 12, 2008 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 6 Riverside Street, Watertown Square, Watertown, Massachusetts.Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Diabetes Action Research & Education Foundation, 426 C Street, NE, Washington DC 20002.
