Obituary for Delia Bridget O'Connor

A Funeral Mass for Delia Bridget (Howe) O'Connor, 103, will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, 2008, in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown.Mrs. O'Connor, a daughter of Sean and Bridget (Barry) Howe, was born in Ballycotton, Co. Clare, Ireland. She received her early education in Ballycotton and when she was 18 years old, came to the United States aboard the USS Franconia, arriving at the Commonwealth Pier in Boston. She was met by her brother, John.For a short time, she lived with her aunt in Lowell and worked in a mill there. Mrs. O'Connor then moved to the Cambridge-Somerville area and worked as a cook for the Andrews family in Cambridge, until her marriage in 1931.In the 1940s she was a waitress at the Coach Grill in Harvard Square and in the 1950s decided to further her education. She attended night school and received a diploma from Somerville High School.Mrs. O'Connor passed the civil service exam, worked as a clerk at the Registry of Motor Vehicles for 2 years; took the test for Senior Clerk; and worked at the Tax Examiners Office of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation until her retirement at age 65.Mrs. O'Connor was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 14 in Watertown, the County Clare Club in Cambridge and the Ladies Sodality of Saint Catherine of Genoa Parish in Somerville. She was a daily communicant in the various parishes of her lifetime including Saint Patrick Parish, Watertown, and for the past 12 years at the Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Waltham.She loved Irish music, was a great set dancer, and played the concertina. At her 100th Birthday celebration she played the concertina with Larry Reynolds. Mrs. O'Connor died on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Maristhill, after a brief illness.She was the beloved wife of the late Martin J. O'Connor who died in December 1991; devoted mother of David R. O'Connor of Arlington, Mary P. "Rusty" Dunn of Watertown, and the late John J. O'Connor; sister of the late Joseph Howe, John Howe, Patrick Howe, Mary Galvin and Julia Lysaght; and she was also loved by 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The Funeral will be from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St., on Rte. 20, Watertown, on Saturday at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 o'clock in the Church of Saint Patrick, 212 Main St., Watertown. Interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Calling hours will be on Friday, August 1st from 4-8 PM in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home on Main Street.
