A Funeral Mass for John Barry Hawkes, Jr., 73, will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown.
Mr. Hawkes, a son of the late John B. and Margaret M. (Brodie) Hawkes, Sr., was born in Jamaica Plain. He graduated from Natick High School and attended Northeastern University where he majored in Chemistry. In 1962, Mr. Hawkes joined W.R. Grace and was a chemist working on plastisol technology. He retired in 1994 after 34 years of service.
During peacetime Mr. Hawkes joined the US Army and also served in the US Army Reserve when he was activated during the Berlin Crisis. His hobbies were Ham Radio and nature study and he was a former Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 262, Watertown.
Mr. Hawkes was a member of the Wellesley Amateur Radio Society where he was the editor of the newsletter. He also gave lectures on radio equipment and especially enjoyed helping the handicapped obtain their ham radio licenses and assisting them in setting up their own ham stations.
A resident of Watertown since his marriage in 1961, Mr. Hawkes died in the Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, on Thursday, April 1, 2010, after a long illness.
He was the beloved husband for 48 years of Barbara A. (Russo) Hawkes; devoted father of Rose Margaret Hawkes and Barbara Anne Poirier both of Bedford, John Barry Hawkes, III of Waltham and Glennmichael Russo of Watertown; dear brother of Geoffrey G.E. Hawkes of West Yarmouth, J. William Hawkes of Sunnyvale, Calif. and Diane Hawkes of Visalia, Calif. Loving grandfather of Peter Jude Poirier, Jr., Stephanie Anne Poirier, Heather Anne Poirier, Alice Rose Hawkes, Brodie Anne Hawkes and Caroline Marie Hawkes.
The Funeral will be from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St., on Rte. 20, Watertown, on Wednesday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM in the Church of St. Patrick, 212 Main St., Watertown. Interment will be Saint Patrick Cemetery, Watertown
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, April 6th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home on Main Street. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
