Obituary for John J. Messina

A Funeral Mass for Lt. John Joseph Messina, Watertown Fire Department (retired), will be celebrated on Saturday, December 13, 2008, in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown.

Mr. Messina, a son of the late Vincenzo and Josephine (DiDominico) Messina, was born in Watertown. He was a lifelong resident and attended Watertown High School. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Force as a Surgical Technician and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant at the end of the War.

Mr. Messina was appointed as a Firefighter to the Watertown Fire Department in December 1947, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in May 1970 and retired in June of 1977. After the war he held membership in the Italian American War Veterans Association, American Legion Hill Post 156 Waltham, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Watertown Firefighters IAFF Local 1347.

He also had a long, active membership in the Piave Fiume Lodge 1513, Order of Sons of Italy in America in Watertown. There he served on the Lodge Council for many years and was a dedicated member of the Bingo committee. He had been active in the community with the Watertown Hot Lunch Program and on the Bingo Committee at St. Patrick Parish. Mr. Messina died on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2008, in Wingate of Brighton. He was 91 years old.

He was the beloved husband of the late Carolyn M. (Nardone) who died in January 1998; devoted father of Robert L. Messina of Frisco, Tex., Joseph C. Messina and Stephen J. Messina both of Watertown, Vincent J Messina of Westford, Mary Louise Walck of Sayre, PA, Mark J. Messina of Naples, Fla. and the late John J. Messina and the late Paul F. Messina.

He was the dear brother of Santa Cotoni of Lincoln, Samuel Messina of Watertown, and the late Frank Messina, Peter Messina, Charles Messina and Angelina Cotoni. He was also loved by 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The Funeral will be from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in WATERTOWN SQUARE at 6 Riverside St. (crnr. No. Beacon St.), Watertown at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 o'clock in the Church of Saint Patrick, 212 Main St., Watertown. Interment will be Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown.

Calling hours will be on Friday, December 12th from 4-8 PM in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in Watertown Square. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend.

Joey's Blood Buddies Project is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that was developed in memory of his late grandson, Joseph Messina. JBB's main focus is to provide ways to help ease the emotional pain while dealing with childhood cancer.
