Obituary for Jonathan H. Jones

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 9am in the Church of St. Patrick, Watertown for Jonathan H. “Jack” Jones, Jr. who passed away in the de Rham Hospice Home, Cambridge on Monday November 18, 2013, age 60.

Born to Marie Simone LaForge and Jonathan H. Jones Sr. in February of 1953, Jonathan (or “Jack” as he liked to be called) was the fifth of six children. A native of Watertown, Jack would attend St. Patrick’s grade school, Newton North Vocational High School and eventually Boston State College where he studied to become a respiratory therapist. Upon the realization that a career in the medical field would likely be dull and unoriginal, Jack split- and tried his hand at several different professions before finding his niche as a plasterer (‘no job too small’) and eventually a proud member of Watertown’s Department of Public Works (‘no job too quickly’), from which he eventually retired. During all of this, he managed to find time to marry (Andrea Forte), raise children (Eric, Katie, and Laura), and build a home (10 Sparkill St, Watertown).

Insuppressible work ethos aside, Jack also took time to enjoy the finer things in life. For instance, many summer days were spent roaming the streets of Watertown on his beloved scooter, embarrassing his children. On Saturdays, some of his favorite pastimes included criticizing the shoddy workmanship of Bob Villa on ‘This Old House’ (truthfully, he was a Steve Thomas kind of guy) and complaining about the seemingly endless availability of ridiculously expensive, single-function tools at Norm Abrams’ disposal on ‘The New Yankee Workshop’ (what ‘yankee’ has a laser guided anything?). He was also loved spending time (we think) with family and friends at Middletown Beach (#2, not 1 or 3), near Newport, Rhode Island- always until the twilight, when it felt like the entire beach was yours.

And right until the end, he had a wicked sense of humor. It wasn’t uncommon to see a treasured stuffed animal, hanging upside down from a window on the side of the house (you can ask Laura). Or watch him fake a heart attack because he didn’t feel like answering a stupid question (yes, this happened). He also had names for everybody (often unflattering): bozo, seagull, squirt, Kate. Of course, underneath all of this, he was a very loving, compassionate man who will be dearly missed by his friends, sorely missed by his family, and forever revered by his children.

He was the beloved husband of Andrea (Forte) Jones. Devoted father of Eric Patrick “Seagull”, Katherine “Katie” and Laura Andrea “Squirt” Jones all of Watertown. Dear brother of Richard Jones of Attleboro, Gary Jones of Watertown, Wilma Peters of Tewksbury, Ann Marie Acciavatti and her husband Jay of Douglas and Lorna Kalajian of Weston. Loving son in-law of Peter WJ Forte and his wife Sarah of Newton. Also survived by several nieces & nephews.
