Obituary for Joseph A. Franchina

A Funeral Mass for Joseph A. Franchina of Watertown will be celebrated on Monday January 16, 2011 at 9 am in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown.

Mr. Franchina, a son of the late Alfred & Mary (Tomso) Franchina died in the Emerson Village Nursing Center after a lengthy illness, age 90. He was born on Nov. 24, 1921, Thanksgiving Day. He was raised in Boston‚??s West End. A graduate of Boston Trade School, taking courses in automotive and aeronautics, he also took courses at the Beacon Art School and the Museum of Fine Arts.

He served in the US Army during WW II, in the ETO, and Normandy (the liberation of France, Belgium and Luxembourg). He was a Sgt. With the 449th AAA, C Batt., Mobile Halftrack, that supported the 5th Inf. Div. under General George S. Patton. He fought in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and ended up in Czechoslovakia at the end of the War in Europe (VE Day).

Upon returning home, he worked for the Ford Motor Company as a mechanic at the Somerville plant for ten years. When the Ford plant moved out of MA, Joseph was fortunate to find employment at Polaroid Corp. In 1958, where he started as a mechanic. His early art background paid off, he took courses at Wentworth Institute Lowell/M.I.T. For the next 20 years, he worked for Polaroid as a contractor. He was an active member of the Polaroid Retirees Association, on the Board of Directors and as the Editor of the PRA Newsletter for 10 Years.

Mr. Franchina loved visiting his family in Florida. Before old age set in, he was an avid bowler, golfer, swimmer, and handyman par excellence. He was a member of American Legion post 440 in Newton.

He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Cecilia M. (Koresky). Devoted father of Paul A. & his wife Rose of AL and Alfred F. of FL. Loving grandfather of Christine Fingado & her husband Brian and Sheila Chandler & her husband Alan. Loving great-grandfather of Hunter & Skylar Fingado and Lauren Chandler. His extended family of Eric, Travis, Shannon & Mark, Molly and Monica. Devoted brother of Sarah Connor of Watertown, Ann Wicker of Pittsfield & Gloria Fernandez of NM. Also survived by many nieces & nephews.

Funeral from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St. on Rt. 20, WATERTOWN on Monday at 8:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 O‚??Clock in the Church of St. Patrick, 212 Main St., Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
