A Funeral Service for Joseph K. “Packy” Pakenham, 84, will be held on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 12:30 PM in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, at 270 Main Street, Watertown.
Mr. Pakenham, a son of the late John A. and Flora (Kaylor) Pakenham, was born in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Oak Park High School, served in the US Army after World War II and enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War.
He served aboard the USS Leyte, the most decorated ship during the Korean War, and was deployed to Korea, manning a 5 inch gun on the carrier. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and contributed to the many veterans organizations which wrote to him for help. For thirty years he worked in the security department for the US Government at the Watertown Arsenal and retired as a Lieutenant in 1987.
He enjoyed following sports and was a great fan of Notre Dame, the Chicago Bears, and Chicago Cubs, as well as, the Red Sox and Patriots. In his early years he also enjoyed boxing and watching the sport. In later years he would enjoy accompanying his wife to the many charitable Bingo games in the Watertown areas. The family has mentioned that Mr. Pakenham had a special love for his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pakenham had lived for many years in Brighton, before moving to Watertown. After his wife died in May of 2000, he moved to Nashua, NH and more recently to Stoughton, Mass. He died on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in the Caritas Good Samaritan Hospital, Brockton, after an extended period of declining health.
He was the beloved husband for 48 years of the late Pauline Joan (Goodwin) Pakenham; devoted father of William J. Pakenham of Bradford, Kathleen M. Woodman of Jamestown, RI, Cheryl A. Farmer of Plymouth, Paula A. Pakenham of Hampton, NY, Sgt. Paul R. Pakenham (US Army) and John E. Pakenham both of Nashua, NH; dear brother of the late Jack Pakenham and the late Paul Pakenham; loving grandfather of Michael Farmer, Lynn Farmer, William J. Farmer, Kimberly C. Pakenham, Paul R. Pakenham, Jr., Taylor Pakenham, Michael Pakenham and John Pakenham; and great-grandfather of Alexis Farmer, Aaron Farmer, Ryan Farmer, and Kyle Farmer.
The Funeral Service will be on Monday, November 9th, at 12:30 PM in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St., on Rte. 20, Watertown. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury. Calling hours will be on Monday from 11 AM – 12:30 PM prior to the service. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
