Obituary for Pasquale "Pat" Sclafani

A Funeral Mass for Pasquale “Pat” Sclafani will be celebrated on Monday October 28th 2013, in the Church of St. Patrick, Watertown at 9 am. Age 100.

Mr. Sclafani was a son of the late Simone and Maria (DeLeo) Sclafani. Born in Boston’s North End in 1913, he was raised and went to school in Boston, graduating from Boston English High School. Pat attended Northeastern Law School at night, graduating with a law degree.

In 1944 he married Ilda Alberico, left the North End and settled in Watertown where he resided for 60 years. He died on Wednesday evening October 24th in his home with his family by him.

Mr. Sclafani was the owner of P. Sclafani Insurance, where he was still active in the family business until 89 years old. He enjoyed spending time at home with family and friends, reading the newspaper and his favorite magazines, watching old movies, and following the stock market and his beloved Red Sox. He was a member of the Watertown Elks and Watertown Sons of Italy.

Mr. Sclafani’s commitment to public service began in his early years in Watertown when he served as Town meeting member and Library Trustee. In the early 1960s, Pat became Watertown first Italian-American Democrat elected to the Office of Selectman and was re-elected thereafter for several consecutive terms. In 1970 Pat was elected to the House of Representatives for Watertown’s 5th Middlesex District and was subsequently re-elected for a second term. Pat’s commitment to serving the town deepened over time, and he was elected to Watertown Charter Commission in the 1980s.

He was admired for his “honesty, sincerity, and integrity,” three admirable qualities that served as his personal mantra and guided him throughout his years of service to Watertown.

He was the beloved husband of the late Ilda (Alberico) Sclafani. Devoted father of Samuel P. Sclafani and his wife Susan of Watertown & Patti Sclafani-Hinkley and her husband Earl Hinkley of Wellesley. Dear brother of Nina Rizza of Manchester, CT, Gussie Marinelli of Raymond, NH and the late Lillian Vitale, Tony, Michael & Rosaria Sclafani. Loving grandfather of Christina Sclafani, Jennifer Sclafani-Hamilton & Elizabeth Hinkley. Great-grandfather of Ella & Zoe Hamilton.
