A Funeral Mass for Phyllis Hope (Smith) Ryan, 81, will be celebrated on Saturday, August 8, 2009, in the Church of Saint Luke, Belmont.
Mrs. Ryan, a daughter of the late Herbert W. and Rita M. (Lovely) Smith, was born in Newton. She grew up in Watertown and graduated from Saint Patrick High School. A resident of Watertown for most of her life, Mrs. Ryan moved to Wayland in 1986, a few years after her husband died.
Mrs. Ryan's main concern in being a homemaker was her family. She also enjoyed nature and contributed to many charitable groups including the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society. In addition she also supported St. Jude's Hospital for Children. She loved Cape Cod, the ocean, and, of course, the natural surroundings. While in Watertown, Mrs. Ryan was a Poll-Checker and followed the politics of the town. Mrs. Ryan died at the Metro West Medical Center (Leonard Morse Campus) in Natick, on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, after a sudden illness.
She was the beloved wife of the late Lt. James E. Ryan (Watertown Police Dept.) who died in 1983; devoted mother of Phyllis "Sandy" Roach and her husband David Roach of Framingham, Linda C. Kilmer and her husband Lee Kilmer of Framingham, Marsha J. Ryan-Henry and her husband Frank Henry of Natick, John E. Ryan and his wife Sally of Denver, Colo., James P. Ryan of Wayland, Judy Smith and her husband Stanley Smith of Randolph, and Margaret A. Close of Wayland; devoted motherly grandmother to Meaghan DePeter of Wayland; and dear sister of Sylvia Adams of Centerville. Also she was loved by 15 grandchildren: Jennifer Hansen, David Roach, Tom Roach, Devin Kilmer, Laurie Kilmer, Alicia Kelly, Ryan Dilbarian, David Ryan, Jack Ryan, Charlie Ryan, Patrick Ryan, Ben Smith, Stephen Smith, Danny Close and Meghan DePeter; and by 6 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Hansen, Kirsten Hansen, Caroline Roach, Abigail Roach, Hannah Roach, and Johnny Kelly.
The Funeral will be from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in WATERTOWN SQUARE, at 6 Riverside St. (corner of No. Beacon St.), Watertown, on Saturday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 o'clock in the Church of Saint Luke, 132 Lexington St., Belmont. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Watertown.
Calling hours will be on Friday, August 7, from 4-8 PM. In the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in Watertown Square. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
