Obituary for Rev. John Mark Hannon

Rev. John Mark Hannon, Pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Parish of Hanson/Pembroke, died suddenly on Friday morning in Sandwich, MA. He was 79 years old.

Fr. Hannon was born, raised, and educated in Watertown. He graduated from Saint Patrick High School, Watertown, in 1952 and that fall entered Boston College, Chestnut Hill, with the intention of entering Saint John Seminary. He was ordained on February 2, 1960 by Richard Cardinal Cushing at Holy Cross Cathedral, Boston.

During the 53 years of his priestly ministry he also served as Pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Stoneham, team minister and Pastor at St. Matthew, Dorchester, Assistant at St. Edward, Medfield, and St. Coleman, Brockton. Father has been the Pastor of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish for the past 18 years and during this past summer was the Administrator at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Monponsett. In the past he served as Vicar Forane for the Stoneham Vicariate and the Plymouth Vicariate-South Region. Father was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Cardinal Cushing Council in Pembroke and a loyal Red Sox fan.

He was the beloved son of the late Mark T. and Ella M. (McGuire) Hannon; devoted brother of Mary H. Farrell of Watertown, and the late Thomas J. Hannon, Francis M. Hannon, Sister Eileen Hannon, O.P., and Margaret Hannon. He was also a dear uncle to 24 nieces and nephews, 46 grandnieces and nephews, and 17 great-grandnieces and nephews.

Fr. Hannon will be received into Saint Joseph the Worker Church, 1 Maquan St., (Rtes. 58 & 14), Hanson, MA., 02341, on Wednesday, October 23rd at 3 PM where he will lie in state until 7 PM with a Parish Mass being celebrated at 7:30 PM. Fr. Hannon will be received into Saint Patrick Church, 212 Main St., (Rte. 20), Watertown, on Thursday, October 24th at 4 PM where he will lie in state until 8 PM. His Funeral Mass will be concelebrated on Friday, October 25th, at 11AM in Saint Patrick Church, Watertown. Interment will follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery, Watertown. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
