Dr. Claud Young

DR. CLAUD RUDOLPH YOUNG, SR. died on December 20, 2011 at the age of 85. He was a dedicated and esteemed practitioner of medicine who specialized in family care and provided comfort and aid to nearly three generations of Detroiters. After graduating from Western Michigan University and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Young returned to Detroit and set up private practice at the Fourteenth Street Clinic (later renamed as the Virginia Park Medical Center), which he owned and operated until his death. He also completed post-graduate studies in Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and was formerly Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Michigan State University. He was also Executive Producer and Host of the highly acclaimed local cable television show, “Health, the Bible and You.” Formally proclaimed an Honored Citizen of the City of Detroit by then-Mayor Coleman A. Young, Dr. Young also served as board member of various foundations and organizations which work to increase citizen awareness, identify solutions, and protect the civil rights of the poor and disenfranchised, and minority populations. Some of the former include: Advisory Board, State Medicaid, State of Michigan; National Board of Trustees, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and President Emeritus of the SCLC Michigan Chapter. Other past activities were Founder and Owner of Bailey General Hospital; Chief of Staff, Kirwood General Hospital; Medical Director, Southwest General Hospital; Founder and General Partner of Young Manor and the Virginia Park Meadows; Chairman, Advisory Commission of the Detroit Health Department; President, Comprehensive Neighborhood Health Services; Member, Board of Trustees, Meharry Medical College; Member, Board of Trustees, Selma Alabama University; Member, Booker T. Washington Businessmen’s Association; and Golden Heritage Member, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Dr. Young was born and raised in Selma, Alabama. He is married to Suncha Young and is the father of Claudia Young-Hill, Claud Jr., Christopher, and Kebina Young.
