Lois Johnson Obituary

Lois Francis Hill Johnson was a retired science teacher and administrator servicing the youth of Detroit Public Schools for 34 years. She and her husband, Charles, are the parents of three sons: Brian, Samuel and Calvin. Lois was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, the third of seven children. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Bluefield State College in West Virginia and a Masters of Arts from the University of Detroit-Mercy. In 1986, Lois joined Detroit’s Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church (TAB) where she served in several capacities until her illness. She served as a member of the Hospitality Committee (responsible for meeting and greeting worshipers as they entered the sanctuary), as a facilitator for Christian Education Week (assisting the guest lecturer), as a participant in the Prison Ministry “Angel Tree Project” (for children of incarcerated parents), as a teacher for the Etiquette Program for young girls (part of the Women and Girls Ministry). In addition, she was a long-time member of the Sorosis Guild at TAB. Lois participated in many Sorosis Guild’s service projects such as: collecting and donating school supplies to the S.A.Y. Youth Program (collecting and donating hats and gloves to the Smiley Life Center), and other items, of all types, needed by the Women’s Justice Center for “My Sister’s Place” (an organization for battered women), partnering with Sampson Elementary School in Detroit to collect supplies and award scholarships for academic and citizenship achievement, collecting clothing for the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (C.O.T.S.), collecting and donating baby blankets to the Red Cross, selecting items for an adopted family, and annual participation in the “RELAY FOR LIFE” cancer walk. Lois was also a faithful member of ROSAS, making sure she was there for all the business and fun as well as ready to collect for the 50/50 draw. As a faithful and committed member of TAB’s Sorosis Guild, Lois served as a representative to the Detroit Unit of Church Women United where she served as the secretary to the group until her illness. She was a regular attendee of the Church Women United State Conferences and served as a member of the State Finance Committee. Lois considered it a privilege to be included in the group of women recognized as Valiant Women by Church Women United. As an extension of her desire to provide service to others, Lois was a very proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a women’s service organization. She participated in various sorority service projects including Jackets for Jobs, operation of a clothes closet for the needy, plus projects involving social activities for senior citizens residing in assisted living facilities. Lois was a woman who liked to keep busy. In addition to all the above activities, she was a past president of her Bluefield State College Alumni association. Lois was a member of the Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society, spending time in Salt Lake City, Utah researching her family’s history. In retirement, she continued her interest in science education by working as a volunteer with the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP), having spent many years as a teacher in the program. She traveled extensively abroad to Paris, Rome, Germany, England, North Africa, Greece, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, and China. She walked up the steps of the Sphinx in Egypt and took pictures by the Great Wall of China. These travels provided her an opportunity to experience and learn about the many cultural differences of each diverse group of people. Lois Francis Hill Johnson was born to the parents of Lewis (Jr.) and Lucy B. Hill of Johnson City, Tennessee. She made her transition on October 6, 2017. Left to cherish her memories are: her husband, Charles E., three sons Brian E., Samuel L., and Calvin E., her two remaining sisters, Barbara A. Dunigan [George (Tony)] and Priscilla D. Robinson (Jerome), a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many close friends and club members, especially her running buddy, Marie Jackson.
